Upcoming Changes for Social Security Beneficiaries
Social Security recipients are set to see an increase in their benefits due to the upcoming cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). In 2025, a 2.5% COLA will be applied, slightly lower than the 3.2% adjustment seen in 2024. This marks the smallest COLA since January 2021, which was 1.3%.
The adjustment aims to help beneficiaries cope with rising prices for essential goods and services, such as food and fuel. On average, recipients can expect an increase of approximately $50 per month, according to Social Security Administration (SSA) officials. While there was a 3.2% increase in 2024, some retirees are expressing concern that the 2025 adjustment might not be sufficient to cover their growing expenses.
Notifications detailing the new benefit amounts will be mailed to recipients starting in early December, with the increased payments scheduled to begin in January.
Moreover, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will also benefit from increased payments, set to commence on December 31. SSI provides monthly financial assistance to adults and children who fall below specific income thresholds and qualify for Social Security benefits.
